Biological Science Technicians (Biotechs) spend time on a variety of ecology tasks, including wildlife surveys, wildlife capture and handling, vegetation/habitat surveys, invasive species management and removal, water quality monitoring and other general natural resource management activities. Data entry/data management, including use of ArcGIS, and clear written and oral communication will also be integral to this position. Isle Royale National Park is a water-based park and travel by motorboat is required to conduct fieldwork. Federal motorboat operation training is provided and required. Bio-techs are expected to work in a variety of environmental conditions; weather can vary from near-freezing temperatures with rain and snow in May to hot and humid weather in late summer. Often work occurs in remote locations in backcountry/wilderness areas of the park. Bio-techs must be in good physical condition and able to hike one-way distances of up to 12 miles over rough terrain while carrying loads of 50 pounds or more. Biting insects or other pests such as black flies, deer flies and mosquitoes are common. NOTE: Due to the need to pilot a federal motor vessel, this is a drug tested position.

This position organizes, schedules, and executes a wide variety of established natural resource management projects. Plans field projects. Collects and organizes field data using standardized data collection procedures and equipment; uses judgment to apply precedents and established techniques to new situations. Ensures adequate quality control of data collected. Performs field and laboratory analysis of collected samples. Records all data collected and provides preliminary analysis and classification of the information. Makes field observations of natural resource conditions. Evaluates observed conditions and problems, and interprets variables, trends, correlations, and interrelationships among data and conditions. Recommends management actions based on prescribed guidelines in existing park plans. This individual will be responsible for leading field crews in landscape level terrestrial restoration projects and/or monitoring restoration of aquatic environments. Work with the various crews on bats, vegetation, and exotic plant treatment, water quality, fish and mussel survey crew. Follows protocols to collect data and uses databases (e.g. MS Access) for data entry, managing and manipulating digital images, conducting surveys, collecting field data, and assists and instructs other employees and volunteers how to efficiently conduct these tasks. Work will be focused on projects related to invasive plant control, habitat restoration, plant inventory/monitoring, and database management.

EXPERIENCE: Have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience for Biological Technician GS-05 is that experience which demonstrates that you have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position Examples of qualifying specialized experience include conducting biological field studies and surveys and assembling the information. Follow standardized procedures to collect data on Wildlife, Fisheries, or plants. Use statistical methods and procedures to perform testing of field data collected. Installs, operates, and maintains resource management equipment (tools, sampling and monitoring, photographic, and laboratory equipment) prepares graphs, charts, and illustrations for reports and technical publications relating to biological management activities. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Have successfully completed a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture or mathematics. At least six (6) semester hours are directly related to the position such as botany, forest ecology, silviculture, plant ecology, as wildlife biology, zoology, ornithology etc. IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE: If you are using education to qualify you must document your course work and/or degree completed in your resume or other application materials you submit. You must submit a copy of your transcripts that identifies for each course the college or university, semester or quarter hours earned, grade received, and date completed. Have a combination of specialized experience as described above and education as described above which total 100 percent. Only education beyond the 60 semester hours above high school is considered qualifying when combined with specialized experience. Thirty semester hours beyond the first 60 is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. For example, 6 month of specialized experience (50% of the specialized experience requirement) and 90 semester hours with at least 12 semester hours related to the position and three (3) hours directly related to the position (50 % of the education requirement) would be considered qualifying.
