Retail Sales Manager: Roles and Responsibilities

The Retail Sales Manager supports the Store Owner and in overseeing all aspects of retail operations, including sales, human resources, merchandising, and operational tasks, specializing in building a high-performing sales team through training, coaching, and development. Both roles focus on ensuring excellent customer experiences and driving overall store performance.

Core Responsibilities

1. Developing and Maintaining a Customer-Centric Culture (3C):

  • Focus: Understand customer perspectives and perceptions to create a superior experience.
  • Execution: Connect all operational aspects to their impact on the customer journey and strive to exceed expectations.
  • Mindset: Promote a positive, solution-oriented, and "can-do" attitude across the team.

2. Driving Sales:

  • Lead workforce management, training, and development to enhance customer experiences.
  • Utilize tools like Sales RX techniques and product knowledge training to boost sales and maximize customer satisfaction.
  • Set and communicate clear sales goals while motivating the team through positive recognition, feedback, and incentives.
  • Analyze store performance data, identify root causes, and adjust strategies to achieve success.

3. Communication and Leadership:

  • Ensure consistent and effective communication with staff and leadership for smooth operations.
  • Provide actionable feedback to maintain high operational and selling standards.
  • Supervise, train, and coach associates on customer service, product promotions, and store maintenance.

Key Focus Areas

Sales and Service:

  • Goal Setting: Clearly communicate objectives and keep the team aligned with company goals.
  • Coaching: Train associates in Sales RX selling techniques and product knowledge to improve sales performance.
  • Metrics: Achieve Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as:
  • Sales performance vs. goals and last year’s numbers.
  • Average ticket value, sales per hour, and units per sale.
  • Customer Loyalty: Utilize marketing tools to build long-term customer relationships.
  • Store Strategy: Adjust strategies based on data analysis to ensure success.

Operations and Merchandising:

  • Plan and execute promotions to drive sales and product turnover.
  • Maintain proper inventory levels and adhere to visual merchandising standards.
  • Manage payroll efficiently and monitor controllable costs for profitability.
  • Support loss prevention policies through training and adherence to cash management procedures.
  • Ensure a clean, organized, and presentable store environment with daily checklist execution.

Marketing and Social Media:

  • Collaborate with the Store Manager to implement marketing campaigns across websites and social media platforms.
  • Engage the team in social media activity to maximize exposure and ensure messaging consistency both in-store and online.

Human Resources Responsibilities

Employee Development:

  • Create a culture of respect, open communication, and regular feedback.
  • Lead the staffing process, including recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding.
  • Develop training materials and performance management programs to drive employee success.
  • Provide consistent performance feedback and conduct reviews.

Conflict Resolution and HR Policies:

  • Investigate and resolve employee issues while ensuring adherence to company HR policies.
  • Use a three-step corrective action process when necessary.

Strategic Alignment:

  • Partner with management to align HR goals with business initiatives, ensuring all employees are positioned for success.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Training Culture: Maintain ongoing training for all employees based on current store opportunities and individual needs.
  • Cross-Training: Implement cross-training to maintain productivity at all times.
  • Leadership Development: Develop Supervisors and team members for succession planning and broader responsibilities.
