Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

Public Rights Project (PRP) is a public interest legal nonprofit, headquartered in Oakland, with a remote team based throughout the United States. Our mission is to close the gap between the promise of our laws and the lived reality of our most vulnerable communities. Since 2017, we have been working at the intersection of community organizing and state and local government enforcement to build a scalable, equitable community-based enforcement model to protect civil rights and advance economic justice. 

We support progressive state and local governments, including Attorneys General, District Attorneys, and City Attorneys' Offices with legal strategy, research, fellowships, and community partnerships to help offices develop high-impact legal cases. 

Public Rights Project seeks to hire a Senior Writer/Editor to be the lead writer and editor for communications and marketing materials at the organization. This is a remote, regular, full-time, and non-exempt position. Reporting to the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer, the Writer/Editor will be responsible for creating and ensuring clear, concise, and compelling content pieces that reflect the brand voice and visual identity.

The Writer/Editor will write stories of impact, case studies, blog posts, website and social media content, video scripts, and more. They will support content needs from other teams and edit and proof materials, ensuring that writing follows our editorial style guide. The ideal candidate is an excellent writer, sharp editor, and engaging storyteller with a proven track record of crafting copy and developing materials that inspire people to take action.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Write impactful and accessible content, including web copy, blogs, case studies, success stories, white papers, and other editorial content to support PRP’s strategic priorities.
  • Build and maintain a story database that reflects ethical storytelling practices and targets key issues and geographies in partnership with other team members.
  • Write, edit, review, and/or proof content derived from subject matter experts, translating technical ideas into clear, concise, and compelling content for both broad and target audiences.
  • Proofread, edit, and refine content to uphold high standards of quality, clarity, and brand consistency.
  • Partner with the development team on compelling content that supports fundraising efforts, from the annual gala to the end-of-year digital campaign.
  • Produce and adapt content across various formats, including long-form articles, blog posts, email newsletters, and social media snippets, ensuring each piece aligns with PRP’s voice and key messages.
  • Project manage editorial pieces, including incorporating feedback from multiple reviewers and seeing projects through from concept to publication.
  • Support the development of content strategies that elevate PRP’s brand, balancing storytelling with business objectives to drive awareness and engagement.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to gather insights, showcase innovative solutions and industry insights, and craft authentic narratives that resonate with internal and external audiences.
  • Review content pitches from staff and provide strategic guidance and editorial support to their projects .
  • Work with PRP’s graphic design team and video vendors to produce multimedia content that supports written pieces and contribute to the development of creative assets, such as video scripts, infographics, slide decks, and more .
  • Conduct photo research and draft captions to accompany editorial content.
  • Use analytics from editorial and communications products and data-driven insights to inform content strategy and development.
  • Stay informed about the news cycle, industry trends, and best practices to continuously improve content and storytelling approaches, making PRP’s external content stand out in the field.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • 8-10 years of communications and/or editorial experience at a legal advocacy organization or national nonprofit.
  • Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the creation of clear, concise, and compelling communications to internal and external audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience translating technical information into clear, concise content for audiences with various backgrounds, interests, and levels of understanding, focusing on the impact of the work in real-world terms.
  • Outstanding writing, editing, copy editing, and proofing skills, with strategic attention to 
  • Experience working in a collaborative, remote team environment with regular virtual meetings and frequent project updates.

  • Experience revising copy through multiple rounds of edits while navigating different perspectives.
  • Strong project management, planning, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple content streams and competing deadlines.
  • Effective time management skills, with the ability to maintain productivity, adapt to shifting priorities, and move through ambiguity.
  • Solid judgment and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail, accuracy, and quality.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced environment while being highly responsive with team members to ensure cohesive communications and branding efforts.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:

Reports to the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires sitting, talking and listening for up to 8 hours per day. Certain situations may require lifting items up to 20 pounds. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Fully remote organization and team. This role may require travel a few times a year to PRP events or meetings. We currently have remote staff in Oakland, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia, Portland (Oregon), and Washington, DC, as well as other cities.

COMPENSATION

The determined salary range for this role is set at $99,000 – $130,000. For internal equity purposes, PRP will not negotiate with candidates outside of the role’s designated range.
