Job Description

This position is a combination of leadership responsibilities as the C&W Pediatric Specialty/OB Social Work Supervisor as well as clinical tasks with the Pediatric Specialty Clinics.

As the supervisor 0.6 FTE (24hr/week), this position will be an intergral part of C&W Pediatric Specialty/OB Social Work leadership which includes providing clinical supervision, case consultation, program management and personnel management to promote and support excellent Pediatric Specialty/OB services to patients and their families in clinical areas as assigned.  Assure compliance with regulatory agencies, University, C.S Mott Children's Hospital and Michigan Medicine Health System policies and procedures.  Exercise considerable independent decision-making authority and expertise specific to an assigned area.  Recruit, select, hire, orient and train, and evaluate staff in assigned areas. Primary activities and decision making authority are predominantly performed independently. Participate in and contribute to projects and initiatives of the departmental leadership group, including coverage for colleagues, and off-hours administrative on-call coverage for support of staff working non-conventional hours. Supervisors will ensure that the Department of Social Work is a place where every person feels valued and can thrive. In addition to supervisory tasks, this position will include 0.4 FTE (16hr/week) Social Work (MSW) position which will be responsible for clinical assignments within the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital Pediatric Specialty clinics. Specific clinic assignment/location is to be determined. Patients with chronic and serious disease groupings often causes significant psychosocial challenges and can lead to risk for complications and safety needs. Due to the significant burden the diseases bring, many patients are at high risk for mental health concerns, suicidality, non-adherence to care, multiple admissions, and surgical interventions when appropriate. These complications and risks are addressed regularly by social work. The families and patients with serious and chronic diagnoses have intense ongoing psychosocial needs and multiple barriers to care. Additionally, data confirm the prevalence of mental health needs among patients and their caregivers.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF SUPERVISOR

  • Post positions, review resumes, interview candidates, select and hire, orient and train new pediatric specialty social workers.
  • Provide clinical consultation to pediatric specialty social workers, as well as administrative and clinical supervision.
  • Assume responsibility for difficult and complex cases based on experience or area of expertise as needed.
  • Provide specialty consultation to other health care staff.
  • Participate as a member of an inter- and intra-disciplinary team, including problem solving, program planning, clinical care planning, and quality improvement.
  • May provide direct patient care services
  • Demonstrates understanding of productivity model, billing guidelines and other documentation requirements related to Department of SW and Care Connect model. 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF PEDIATRIC SPECIALTY CLINICAL SOCAL WORKER

  • Assessment of coping, providing brief counseling/support, and connection to mental health resources
  • Crisis intervention including but not limited to mental health crises, suicide assessments, behavioral interventions (for patients or parents), and urgent needs assessments.
  • Care coordination with medical team(s) re: adherence to treatment plan and/or quality of life
  • Case consultation regarding treatment support needs for all multidisciplinary team members  
  • Assessment for barriers to care and connecting to appropriate community supports
  • Education, assessment, and resource connection for patients receiving treatment
  • Collaboration with community resources re: Make-A-Wish, Rainbow Connection, DHHS, CMH, CSHCS, etc.
  • Advocacy and extensive support with educational/school barriers re: 504 Plan or IEP and other related supports
  • Care coordination with CPS and foster care as well as consultation with CPT around abuse/neglect concerns
  • Education and support with adolescent to adult care transition, including guardianship and transition of care processes
  • Psychosocial assessment regarding complex care needs and management of treatment plans
  • Providing information/education and referral re: insurance/CSHCS
  • Advocacy and coordination regarding obtaining or covering medications and DME and addressing cost barriers.
  • Educational/school issues when children are reintegrated into their home communities and partnering with the Education specialists if children are not able to attend school in a conventional manner. 
  • Address adherence issues and barriers to adherence to infusion/medications.
  • Collaborate with physicians and surgeons to prevent delayed discharges and unnecessary admissions or ED visits.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
General supervision is received from Social Work Manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Functional and administrative supervision, orientation and mentorship are provided for Clinical Social Workers - MSW and Senior MSW Social Workers.

  • A Master's degree in social work from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education is necessary.
  • Some experience of professional social work is necessary.
  • Current licensure (LMSW) to practice Social Work in the State of Michigan is required.  Licensure will be verified via PSV by department administration.
  • Previous experience with pediatric medical and mental health social work.
  • Previous experience providing formal clinical supervision to social workers. 
  • Previous experience of informal or formal leadership experience in medical setting. 
  • Independent, sound decision-making is necessary for success in this position. 
  • Skilled in utilizing mental health screening tools such as ASQ, C-SSRS, PHQ-9, GAD-7
  • Previous experience with families and children around issues of chronic illness, adjustment to illness and disability, learning/school issues, locating community resources 
  • Proficiency in adjustment, loss, and bereavement issues 
  • Skilled in developing rapport and effectively communicating with a diverse patient population
  • Efficient, accurate assessment of patient needs and effective care planning
  • Effective organizational skills, flexibility, self-motivation, the ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks in a dynamic medical setting
  • Independent, sound decision-making is necessary for success in this position
  • Effective collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Proficiency in keeping accurate and timely clinical records by computer 

This is full time, 40 hour/week position. The typical schedule is Monday-Friday with start and end times 8:00-4:30 or 8:30-5:00.
